It is a well-known fact that Canadians have been lagging behind when it comes to online shopping. Part of this was due to the fact that Canadian retailers were not as present online as their US counterparts, causing issues related to International shipping and duties.
Thanks to recent shifts in markets, more and more retailers are now recognizing the importance of expanding online and Canadians are happily taking advantage of it! In fact, an eMarketer report earmarked 2015 as the tipping point for Canadian retail, especially with most retailers turning to ecommerce in order to remain competitive and gain new markets.
eMarketer estimates that ecommerce sales in Canada will reach a record $27 billion in sales in 2015, representing a 17% increase from the previous year.
When it comes to devices used, PCs are still the leaders in online purchases but that does not mean that retailers should dismiss the mobile user. A 2014 study by Brandspark highlighted the fact that approximately 75% of survey respondents would use their mobile devices while shopping in-store. The top activities? Price comparison, photo taking and feature research.
Overall, Canadians are still not as plugged in as their Asian and American counterparts, but steadily climbing numbers are quickly closing that gap. Will you be there when your customers are looking?
